New York-based mobster who made a fortune in the alcohol bootlegging and numbers racket businesses during the prohibition era. He was killed by the Mafia Commission, who disapproved of his plan to kill U.S. Attorney Thomas Dewey.
He spent time in prison for burglary as a teenager.
His partner in crime was Joey Noe. Together, they formed the only non-Italian gang able to compete with the infamous Five Families.
His father abandoned his family when he was 15, forcing him to drop out of school to support himself and his mother.
He was a competitor of fellow mobster Jack Diamond, a.k.a. "Legs" Diamond.
